Why I am running
I am a fifth generation Iowa, a mom and a grandmother. I want my kids to be able to stay in Iowa and earn good wages and my grandchildren to work hard, play by the rules, and grow up in a progressive, fair minded and forward looking Iowa where they can raise their children. As your Representative I will provide fresh ideas, a new progressive voice response to you and your community, not just the status quo for the privileged few!
I have worked and volunteered for my State and Community all my life. I am proudest of being a founder of Hospice of Pella. I have worked as a clinical social worker for 25 years helping individuals, children and troubled families throughout Iowa and I have worked for Capstone Behavioral Health in both the Newton and Knoxville offices for 10 years as a Master's level Licensed Independent Social Worker. I have a wide range of work experience, from store clerk, medical secretary and police dispatch, correctional work release desk officer to DMACC Adjunct Professor.
I have volunteered for my community since I was a teenager and candy striper at Mercy Hospital, to the League of Women Voters in Pella, Pella Friends of the Library and the Union Street Players Pella's community theater. I have just completed a 6 month term as Chairman and 2 years as a member of the Central Committee for the Marion County Democratic Party. I have been a delegate to county and State conventions, a poll watcher for Pella precinct #3. I was the Democratic candidate for State Presentative in 2008 for District #71.
I grew up in Des Moines, and am a fifth generation Iowan. I graduated high school from Des Moines Roosevelt. I obtained my BA in Sociology/Criminology and Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa. My husband Arvin and daughter Libby also graduated from University of Iowa and my son, Peter graduated from Iowa State. I have been married to Arvin for 38+ years and we have lived in Pella together for 33 years, The VanZante's have graduated Pella Schools for generations. Arvin & I have two grown children; Libby & Jason Kyte, Peter & Elle VanZante and two grandchildren Riley & Eleanor Kyte.
I bring a wide range of interests, knowledge and experience to all my endeavors. My extensive and eclectic background will make me a responsive, fair and forward looking representative for Iowa and District #71; Knoxville, Pella, Pleasantville, Otley and Swan.
