- BA in Sociology & Criminology, and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa
- 23 year career working for individuals, children and troubled families throughout Iowa
- Former Adjunct Professor of Sociology at DMACC, Newton campus
- Board member of Pella's community theater, The Union Street Players
- The League of Women Voters Corrections Study Committee
- Pella Friends of the Library Board
- Marion County Democratic Central Committee
- Delegate to county, regional, and state conventions
- Active in 2004, 2006, and 2008 caucuses
- Poll watcher for Pella's 3rd Precinct
